Mayor of Moscow
Upon nomination by Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, Sergei Sobyanin was granted the authority of Mayor of Moscow by the Moscow City Duma on October 21, 2010, for a term of five years.
Prior to this, from 2008, Mr Sobyanin was Head of the Government Administration and Deputy Prime Minister. From November 2005, he was Head of the Presidential Administration.
From 1991 to 2005, Mr Sobyanin held managerial positions in Tyumen Region, including Head of the Administration of Kogalym, First Deputy Head of the Administration of Khanty-Mansiisk Region, Chairman of the Duma of Khanty-Mansiisk Region, First Deputy Presidential Representative in Urals Federal District, and Governor of Tyumen Region. He has been a member of the Federation Council, and led the Committee on Constitutional Law and Legal-Judicial Affairs.
Mr Sobyanin was born on June 21, 1958, in the village of Nyaksimvol in Berezovsky Region of Tyumen Region.
In 1980, Mr Sobyanin graduated from Kostroma Technological Institute and in 1989, graduated from the All-Union Correspondence Institute of Law. He holds a Doctorate of Law.
