In 1996 Mr Kudrin was appointed deputy head of the Presidential Administration and head of the President’s Chief Audit Department. In 1997 he became first deputy to the Finance Minister. From 2000 – 2011 Mr Kudrin was a Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation.
In early 1990s he joined the Leningrad Committee for Financial Reform. He then went on to head the Leningrad Free Trade Zone, the region’s Committee for Economic Development and the Chief Directorate of Finance of the City Council of St. Petersburg. In 1993–96 he was deputy to the Mayor and head of the city’s Committee for Economy and Finance.
Alexei Kudrin graduated from the Leningrad State University with a degree in Economics and worked at the Soviet Academy of Sciences’ Institute for Social and Economic Studies. He is the author of 15 scientific works on economics and finance.
